Knaresborough Engineering: A Story of Legacy and Evolution
In 1975, Andrew Waller’s vision took root within the modest confines of a garden shed, marking the inception of Knaresborough Engineering. His wife, Shirley, stood as his first employee, embodying the company’s early spirit of dedication and partnership. As the business gained momentum, it transitioned to an extension in the garage, laying the groundwork for its future growth.
The company’s relocation to its inaugural unit at the Thorp Arch Trading Estate near Wetherby marked a significant leap forward, reflecting the expanding success and demand for its services. Over the years, the business continued to flourish, necessitating moves to larger units, showcasing its relentless evolution.
The family legacy deepened when Andrew was joined by his son, Robert, in 1992, followed by his daughter, Helen, in 2000. Their involvement signalled a new era of innovation and familial dedication to the company’s growth.
In 2002, Robert departed to explore a photography career, spending twelve transformative years in Southeast Asia. However, his return to the company shortly before Andrew’s passing in 2022 became a pivotal moment, further signifying a continuation of the family’s commitment to Knaresborough Engineering.
Today, the business thrives under the joint leadership of Robert and Helen, upholding the founding principles instilled by their father—values centred on quality, integrity, and innovation. The company’s continuous expansion and adherence to these core values serve as a beacon, guiding the way for the next generation within the industry.
As Knaresborough Engineering forges ahead, it remains a testament to Andrew Waller’s legacy, evolving and innovating while steadfastly upholding the principles that have been its cornerstone since its inception.
Originally setting up on my own – in a shed at the end of my garden in Knaresborough. I had a large order looming; I was asked what I was going to call the business and so in July 1975, Knaresborough Engineering was born!
I found some premises on Thorp Arch Trading Estate and with the intention of moving back to Knaresborough, I decided to keep the name. As the years went by, I moved into many buildings all within Thorp Arch, but never back to Knaresborough. By this time our name was very well established so it was kept. We eventually moved to our current premises on Sandbeck Estate in July 2003.
In 2011, I turned the business from a sole proprietor to a Limited Company and became Knaresborough Engineering (Yorkshire) Limited.
Now 46 years later, I feel very proud of what I have built, a lot of blood, sweat and tears have gone into getting us where we are today. I am lucky that I have never had to advertise and have always worked on ‘word of mouth’ from many happy customers ranging from Scotland down to Kent and in between.
The business has evolved over the years from Dust Control, working mainly with Mild Steel, to where we are now working with Stainless Steel and General Fabrication.
We are now a great team of 27 working from the Initial Design Office, through Cutting, Folding, Fabricating, Polishing and many applications in between.
Whether we are making a full Bar System, Drainage Channel, Fume Unit or a single Bracket we will always use our best efforts to produce our best quality product for you.
I hope you are happy with what we have to offer.
Andrew Waller, Founder 1948 – 2022
